Sharing Home Made Tonic Recipes

It seems from my Instagram that you have all been enjoying my kitchen antics of late. The harvest season is upon us and as we move into Autumn, it always inspires me to start, with what my husband jests as kitchen witchery. Nature has lots of gifts and it is such a joy to use the bounty offered, to create some useful tonics for the up and coming months. The most popular requests have been the two below. So I decided to use put them into this weeks blog post. I hope you find them helpful.

Elderberry Syrup

What you need:
2/3 cups (around 85g of elderberries)
3 1/2 cups of water (around 826 mls)
1 cup of local honey
Saucepan
Spoon
Jug
Masher /Fork
Strainer / Sieve
Glass Bowl
Sterilised glass bottle or Jar

Method:
Boil the Elderberries in the water for approx 45-60 minutes (this should reduce the liquid by around half the original amount) Take care it doesn't burn to the bottom of the pan.

Remove from the heat and mash the berries through a strainer or sieve into a clean glass bowl (leaving the rich purple juice) making sure you don't push through any bits or hard parts.
Allow to completely cool.

Add all the honey in and mix well.

Decant into bottle or Jar.

Read to use another time. Keep refrigerated.

I add a teaspoon of this syrup to water or a drink , I love to add it to warm blackcurrant juice in the winter months not daily but if there are any signs of being unwell. My understanding is Elderberry contains antioxidants so can help the immune system. But it is no replacement for getting appropriate medical advice. Please note that uncooked berries can make you unwell. So please cook them as described.

I love to make mine and forage for elderberries myself but if this is not an option for you. You can buy Elderberries like these to make your own. Or you can purchase the tinctures already prepared for you. (Always read the labels)

Iron Tonic

What you need:
Orange
Glass Bowl
Spoon
Knife

Method:

PLEASE NOTE : Although Iron tonic contains lots of ingredients that are high in Iron and maybe beneficial for you, it should not be used in place of accepted medicine or medical advice. Always check with a medical professional, if you are needing help or advice.

Let me know if you have any other recipes or tonic suggestions. Its always good to hear your thoughts as well.

Have fun in the kitchen with the harvest as it comes in and stay healthy and safe.
